Factors Associated with Drinking Problem Experienced? Among Adolescents

Abstract

|
Purpose:This study aimed to identify factors associated with drinking problem experienced among adolescent drinkers.
Method:This study employed a second analysis in which raw data were extracted from a nationwide probability samples of 2,119 student from middle and high school in Korea. Among them, 517 drinkers were subjected to analyses and level of drinking problem as a dependent variable was measured with CRAFFT. Independent variables included social demographic characteristics including sex, school glade, academic achievement grades, and disposable monetary allowance, parent-child relationship in terms of parental support and monitoring, and drinking-related characteristics, including alcohol expectancy, subjective norms of alcohol use, drinking network, pressures from family members to drink alcohol in family events/rituals, frequency of excessive drinking, and perceived easiness to purchase alcohol beverages. A generalized linear Poisson regression analysis was employed to identify factors associated with drinking problems among the students under study.
Results:Factors associated with level of drinking problem experienced? among adolescents included mother¡¯s support & monitoring, alcohol expectancy, subjective norm of alcohol use, drinking network, pressures from family members to drink in family events/rituals, frequency of excessive drinking, and perceived easiness to purchase alcohol beverages.
Conclusion:Level of drinking problems experienced by adolescents were associated with multi-level factors including individuals, interpersonal and community. Multi-level measures should be taken into consideration to prevent adolescents from using alcohol misuse.
